Pathogenic Bacteria Isolated from Korean Patients
Seung Hahm Park
Dept. of Microbiology, National Medical Center, Seoul, Korea
Vol.1 Num.1 (p33~48)
This medical center holds 400 beds since it's establishment. Dept. of microbiology has performed the routine examination, in clinical microbiology which includes tuberculosis, parasitology, general bacteriology, serology and mycology. This report covers the results collected during recent six years from Sept. 1962 to Oct. 1968.
Most of the data in this report have been summarized from the records in general bacteriology and certain parts of serology, excluding the data from tuberculosis, parasitology and mycology which have been published already.
1. The highest incidence of Staphylococcus aureus has been obserbed from blood culture, next to this, Salmonella, E. coli, Colifrom bacilli, Enterococcus, Streptococcus, Pseudomonas sp., Klebsiella sp., Proteus sp., B. anitratum in decreasing order.
Micrococcus, meningococcus, Corynebacterium sp., Arizona, Alcaligenes faecalis, Candida albicans and Flabovacteria have been isolated once respectively
2. Fourhundred ninety eight strains of H. influenzae have been isolated and revealed higher incidence during December to May.
3. Sixthousand two hundred one strains of Staphylococcus aureus have been isolated. This reveals the highest number of bacteria isolated among all specimens. Sensitivity to chloramphenicol and tetracycline during 1968 seemed to be decreased compared with that of 1964.
4. Cases of Pseudomonas have been stepped up recently year by year.
5. The incidence of Shigella flexneri was the highest among all shigellosis. Sh. sonnei apperared the next to that of sh. flexneri.
Sensitivity of shiegella strains to chloramphenicol and tetracycline during 1968 has been decreased markedly compared with that of 1964, suggesting valueless in treatment. However, colistin and ampicillin showed highly sensitive.
6. Group D of Salmonella, especially Sal. typhi showed high incidence among salmonellosis and revealed peak in October.
7. Beta Streptococus isolated mostly in cooler season during September to February, highest in October but isolated lower peak in May.
8. D. pneumoniae isolated high numbers in cool season, October to February highest in December with lower peak in May.
9. C. diphtheriae isolated high numbers in cool season, October to February, highest in February with lower peak in April. Gravis type was most prevalent in diphtheria.
10. The highest rate of bacteria isolated from suspected cases of venereal diseases was Staphylococcus aureus. Gonococcus followed next to Staphylococcus aureus. E. coli, Enterococcus, Candida sp., Staphy-shigella, Pseudomonas sp., Moraxella, B. anitratum have been isolated once recpectively.
11. Pregnant women showed 2.8 per cent of reactivity for reagin tests including VDRL, Meinicke and CF test.
