Laboratory-based Influenza Surveillance in Korea during 1984~1985 Season

Durging 50 days between February 19 to April 8 1985, Influenza A (H3N2) epidemic occurred mainly in the large cities (Seoul, Pusan, Kwangjoo) in the country. Epidemic peak was shown at 12th week of the year. Local city outbreak were shown typical sequential epidemic from Seoul capital city of the country.
The epidemic associated viruses were determined as A/philippines/2/82/(H3N2) and A/Mississippi/1/85(H3N2)-like strain. Influenza virus isolation rate chiefly from influenza-like illness of children patients were average 8.8%.
For the study of bacterial superinfection during the influenza epidemic Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from 29% of influenza virus confirmed patients, and whereas from 15.8% of influenza virus not confirmed patients.
Two cases of Reye syndrome associated with A/philippines/2/82(H3N2) were demonstrated by serological antibody test from hospitalized children patients.
