We studied the effect on phagocytic function of human neutrophils using cefoperazone with direct and indirect contact mehods. The effect was measured by counting the number of engulfed S. aureus by microscopy. Phagocytosis was enhanced at all concentrations (0.05 ug/mL ~ 100 ug/mL) and was maximal at concentration of 0.1 ug/mL in both methods (about 2 times that of the control). For successful treatment of intractable infections which are frequent in neutropenic hosts, it is logical to choose drugs potentiation the various defense mechanissms in addition to antibiotic therapy.
