A Survey of Salmonellosis Epidemic in Ulsan Industrial Park in 1987

A Survey was made to idenify an infectious source and analyze pattern of epidemic from industrial park, Kyungsang nam do, where the epidemic was occurred in a fashion of explosive from July to August in 1987 and it seemed to be an salmonellosis.
The results were as follows;
1) The peak age incidence was the 2nd and 3rd decade amounting to 53(36.0%) and 73(49.7%) patients respectively. The ratio between male and female was 12.7:1 and so extremely prevailed in male. 113 patients were direct productive workers.
2) In bacteriologic study, blood culture was positive in 41 patients (28.7%):39 for Salmonella group D, one for Salmonella group A and one for Salmonella group B. Stool culture was positive in 4 patients (3.5%) and 7 healthy persons (1.6%) of the patients family.
3) Widal test in a titer of 1:160 or greater was observed in 63.4% of the patients within 3 weeks after illness.
4) The duration for defeverscence was within 7 days in 92.6% of the patients treated with antibiotics; the mean duration was 3.1 days in patients treated with chloramphenicol, 3.5 days in combination of chloramphenicol and amoxicillin and 4 days in combination of chloramphenicol and cephalosporin.
5) Most of the patients were working in outside of the plants during hot weather just before the epidemic. Drinking of ice water which were preserved, carried in tank and supplied could be worthy of notice as an infectious source.
6) In follow up bacteriologic survery 6 months later, no cases of chronic typhoid carrier could be detected among 26 patients who were culture positive during this epidemic.
