Vol.20 Num.4 (p291~296)
One hundred and seventy one children, with culture-proven Shigellosis, were admitted to the Pediatric ward of S.N.U.C.H. from Jan. 1978 till Jun. 1988, and 43(25.1%) of them had convulsions. Bacteriological, clinical and laboratory data were compared between patients with and without convulsion to define risk factors for the development of seizures. Of 171 patients, Shigella flexneri was isolated from 135(79%) children, Shigella sonnei from 31 (18%), and Shigella boydii from the remaining 5(3%). Convulsion was developed 41.9% of flexneri patients, 22.9% of sonnei, and none of bodyii.
Peak body temperature, Shigella stratin, band form neutrophil count and presence of bloodymucoid diarrhea or vomiting independently affected the development of seizures. However age, sex, hemoglobin, hematocrit, total leucocyte count, and serum electrolyte level showed no differences between the two groups.
