IIn order to know natural course on Korean with HIV infection, we evaluated hematoimmunological state including CD4+ ce;;s. β2-microglobulin (Pharmacia, Sweden), complete blood count (CBC), ESR and skin delayed type hypersensitivity for 17 dead and living AIDS patients with CD4+ cells below 200/mm3.
Serum β2-microglobulin level (mg/L) tested most recently was 5.5±2.4 totally, 6.3±2.4 at mean 4.6 months before death for 7 dead patients and 4.7±2.3 for 7 living patients. Mean CD4+ cells(/mm3) was 103±67 totally, 73±50 at 2.8 month before death for 7 dead patients and 133±71 for 7 living patients. There were not significant differenc for WBC and hemoglobin, but lymphocyte count and percentage were 901±423(/mm3) and 23%, 2133±1092(/mm3) and 42%, for dead and living patient, repectively (p<0.01 and p<0.05). ESR (mm/h) was 59±7 for dead patient and 34±24 for living patient (p<0.05). Skin delayed type hypersensitivity through Multitest CMI (Institute Merieux, France) were decreased; two patients were anergy, 6 partial anergy and 2 normal.
We confirmed that serum β2-microglobulin level increases and CD4+ cells count decreses as disease progresses, and regular CBC findings and ESR measurement may be used as a simple and easy tool for progression to AIDS if serum β2-microglobulin and CD4+ cells measurement were not available.
