Recently the serotype of Korean strains of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi have been reported in several laboratories and we know that karp, Gilliam, and new serotype (Boryong) strains exist in Korea. We isolated 16 strains of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi from patients of Ulsan area in Kyongnam Province. The serotype of these strains were identified by indirect immunofluorescent test using mouse monoclonal antibodies. Among 16 strains, 15 (94%) strains were identified as Boryong serotype and one strain was as Gilliam serotype.
