Listeria monocytogenes is the only human pathogen among seven species in this genus and listeriosis generally occurs in the setting of pregnancy or immunosuppression due to illness or medication. Sepsis and meningitis are the most common presentations of listeriosis in non-pregnant adults. However, meningitis and sepsis due to L. monocytogenes is not clinically distinguishable from those due to other bacteria. We have experienced a fatal case of listeriosis presenting as fulminant sepsis-meningitis. Initially, the cse was mistaken as a fulminant meningococcemia with meningitis because the case showed fulminant clinical course and scattered purpuric lesions on whole body. Later, this case was confirmed as L. monocytogenes sepsis-meningitis.
