Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a lethal soft-tissue infection characterized by rapidly progressive necrosis of fascia and subcutaneous tissue spared by skin and muscle. NF tends to develop in younger people without underlying disease. It may induce severe toxic shock-like syndrome of which manifestations are shock and multiorgan failures. Early recognition, treatment with antibiotics, and aggressive surgical debridement of necrotic tissue are mandatory to successful outcome. Recently many cases of NF caused by Streptococcus pyogenes have been reported in Europe, USA, Austrailia, Japan, and other countries but are very rare in Korea. Two cases of NF are reported here with review of the literature.
