Vol.31 Num.3 (p252~256)
Trichosporon beigelii is blown as a causative agent of white piedra, which is a superficial infection of the human hair shaft. In recent years, the incidence of trichosporonosis, which is a lethal systemic infection by T. beigelii, has been increasing in immunocompromised patients. To improve prognosis of trichosporonosis, early identification of the causative organism and early treatment are necessary. As far as we know, no case of fungemia by T. beigelii has yet been reported in Korea. Herein we report a case of Hickman catheter-related fungemia by T. beigelii with review of the literature. A man was admitted to Samsung medical center due to abdominal pain. He had been diagnosed as advanced stomach cancer with peritoneal seeding after laparotomy and received anticancer chemotherapy. Fever developed on hospital day 3. From blood cultures and catheter tip culture, T. beigelii was isolated. Fungemia was successfully treated with amphotericin B and thereafter he has received anticancer chemotherapy without relapse of trichosporonosis.
